Tips for Hosting a Successful Field Trip

Listed below is information to help you coordinate the Focus on the Future field trip on your campus.

Field trips last one to two hours. Host schools are welcome to provide a small snack to visiting students. The cost of the snack will be reimbursed by MAFAA at approximately one dollar per student.

""Host sites will need to provide directions to the campus, which also indicate where the bus can be parked. A hard copy map that can be faxed to the elementary school is preferable. Plan to meet the students at the bus when they arrive on campus. Be sure to leave time at the end of the field trip for questions and answers and allow time for the students to walk back to the bus.

You will want to provide the students with information about your institution. You may also want to give students something to bring home with them at the end of the field trip such as a pencil or note pad with your logo on it.

Successful field trips involve students in hands-on activities. Touring alone is not exciting for younger students. Stops at the science lab, theater, gymnasium or art labs where students can participate in college-like experiences can make the tour more meaningful.

You may want to:

  • Contact your institution's public relations office for institutional materials.

  • Contact alumni office for giveaways - pen, tablets, and key chains.

  • Contact admissions office for student tour guide(s) for campus tour.

  • Determine special places on your campus to visit.

  • Purchase a small snack to provide to students.

  • You may want to bring your camera and take pictures. Please provide a copy to the Early Awareness Committee and we will reimburse you for the cost.
